Dragon Soul 5% nerfs, 4.3.2, and the state of things.

Ah nerfs, hated by some, but secretly loved by all.  Dragon Soul has been out for quite some time now, and while our server finally saw its Realm First: Heroic Madness, this content is already feeling dated by most regular raiders.

I think Blizzard is taking the right approach with the difficulty nerfs this time around versus Firelands, which was just horrible.  The big nerfs to tendon health on Spine is quite welcome in my book.  Forcing a challenge solely based on numbers and comp is lazy design.

I look back to T11 and Heroic Nefarian to see how a real heroic mode should be.  Major changes from normal to heroic, multiple phases that are unique (not like spine/madness).  It really felt like a unique fight even if we were fighting recycled baddies for the twentieth time.  Raiding may always have a grinding/practice element to it, but it should challenge folks to think out of the box, develop strategies that work with your comp, tweak and perfect those strats, all leading up to the penultimate nerdgasm at the kill.

Circling back to T13 there has only really been one feel good kill for me and that was Heroic Zon’ozz.  We never used the eventually hotfixed bug, and we ran with more melee than what was deemed the right comp at the time.  That fight, while not terribly mechanic laden had enough in it to make it interesting, coupled with the very tight enrage and very high healing requirements.  That one took me sitting down and really parsing out logs and doing some math with optimizing our positioning and bounces amoung other things.  All that paid off when we finally got our kill, and that did feel pretty damn good.

The rest of these bosses have pretty much fallen over.  Our goal this week was Hagara, and she died night one in around 2 hours.  While I love when people perform the way they should, these bosses just seem uninspired compared to fights in Ulduar (Firefighter), and even some in T11.  While we may be weeks behind, we are a more casual progression raiding group.  We only push 3 nights a week, compared to 4 or 5 nights.  We have also found ourselves revisiting older content for achievements like Sinestra just because it is fun.

So wrapping this diatribe up, the nerfs are good overall I feel.  Timing is right, it does not make a huge difference of the challenge of the fight yet, and 4.3.2 just smoothed over some balance and issues.  This is it until MoP.  3 more heroic bosses for my raid and likely another 5+ months until MoP hits our hands.  My advice, don’t rush it.  The race has long been over and anything at this point does not really give one major bragging rights.  Take some time and go revisit older fights, get those achievements you might have missed.  These things can break up the doldrums of progression this tier and help keep your team interested in WoW and the group.

Oh and yes I will put up Ultraxion and Hagara hard mode guides very soon!

Week 2 recap of Dragon Soul – Heroics!

Well this week was quite a crazy week.  With the major players pushing 6/8 Hard Modes this week it will be interesting to see what happens with Deathwing.  Will it be another Heroic Ragnaros taking guilds like Paragon 500+ attempts to nail down?  Madness on normal mode is still a somewhat challenging and dynamic encounter.  Having the ability to choose which buffs you want to keep and which ones you lose can vary greatly based on how you approach the fight.  Our group for example chose to go 1 Tank, 3 Heals, and 6 DPS with the order of Alexstrasa, Ysera, Nozdormu, and finishing on Kalecgos.

Shout out to Gag Reflex on our server who currently is sitting at 5/8 HM and ranked one of the top in the world overall with very early world kills.  They have very talented folks on their roster and have put forth an immense effort and time investment to get where they are this tier.

Our raid is not quite as cutting edge as those guys, but we did manage to nail down heroic Morchok this week.  The step up on hard modes is quite noticeable and the 4 piece tank bonuses for most classes granting an extra cool down will be immensely helpful in the progression to come.

How well did your raid do?  Have you slain Deathwing and are working on hard modes, or are you pushing still to bring down the beast?  Either way, look forward to more guides tonight and a heroic Morchok guide coming soon!

Heroics tomorrow. Week recap, LFR exploits, and plan of attack.

This has been quite the week.  With many raiding guilds finishing off 8/8 in normal modes the anticipation comes for the soul-crushing, guild-disbanding, drama-creating hard modes.  This week has been a flurry of new content, including LFR which turned out to be quite fun despite my original pretensions.  It is a great way to blow off some steam and have a laugh at what it must feel like to be a B-player in Vodka on a farm boss.  There was, however, a pretty large exploit with LFR this week where you could get loot regardless of having been locked.  Many top guilds were in LFR farming and abusing this exploit only to have their armories half-naked a couple days later.  One may ask though, does the inherit competitive nature of high-end raiding promote behavior like this (saronite grenades anyone?) and can you really blame these guys for trying to use everything at their disposal in their attempts to claw and stab their way to the top?  Now this was clearly an exploit that anyone who has played WoW for any real amount of time should know, saronite grenades, class stacking, and other tactics are a little more fuzzy.  It will be interesting to see what, if anything, more Blizzard will do about this.

I am looking forward to tomorrow’s exploits and first looks at heroic Dragon Soul.  While we may not be shooting for any firsts, our raid is dedicated to getting 8/8 heroic modes down, and on that note we are looking for a Death Knight to add to our roster (DPS-MS / Tank-OS).  If you are interested in joining up in our exploits and want to know more, whisper Furtim on Dark Iron.

Welcome to Stood in the Fire

Welcome to Stood in the Fire, a blog dedicated to sharing and swapping raid strategies in the World of Warcraft video games.  I am creating this for my guild, Knights of Arcadia (KoA), to promote our PvE’ers and to draw attention to our great guild.  If you are not from Dark Iron – US or KoA come check us out, we are a premier guild in the Penny Arcade Alliance.  I plan to focus on 4.3 content initially with 10-man being the focus, but depending on where this goes 25 could come as well.  Because I roll as a Rogue, I may throw in some interesting rogue related tips.

Much like many of other raiding guilds this week we completed Dragon Soul on normal mode and are looking forward to hitting heroic difficulty next week.  During our progress I will make updates to my thought stream on our strategies and attempts.  Our raid schedule is currently Tu-Th evenings so expect most updates during and directly after this time-frame.

I encourage readers to add their strategy comments and thoughts on 4.3 raiding in general and let’s have some fun killing bosses.  Subscribe and good luck out there!
